| Revere School is located in the south side of Chicago in Chicago Public School Region 5. Revere is part of a very old community known as Grand Crossing because of the crossing of the Illinois Central, Pennsylvania and New York Central Railroads at 75th street. The Revere School district is unique in the city in being a small, though heavily populated district, which is almost self-contained. The Northern boundary is a large, old cemetery (Oakwoods) which predates the Civil War. The school consists of two buildings. The older of the two buildings was constructed in 1902 and is three stories in height. The newer building was constructed in the 1960's and is also three stories in height. The two buildings are connected at the ground floor through a breezeway. Most of the 561 students live in single-family homes or apartments in the neighborhood. Some students are bussed in for the Bilingual and speech programs. The school services students in pre-school through eighth grade, as well as maintaining three cross-categorical, special education classrooms. 98% of the student population is African American, while 2% is of Hispanic decent. Student Mobility (the number of students who enroll in or leave school the school year) is 30%. Student attendance is steadily improving over the years, 1998 experienced an attendance rate of 93.3%. The number of students who are identified as low income is 97.3%, as evidenced by State School Report Card. ITBS Scores have improved this year in both reading (2%) and math (6.9%) but still show a need for greater improvement. Mr. Shelby Taylor has been the school principal since July, 1998 along with Dr. Pamela J. Parker, the assistant principal. The Revere Staff consists of 33 teachers, 3 teacher assistants, 2 CWA's, 1 business manager, 2 clerks, 1 building engineer, 3 maintenance workers, 1 lunchroom manager and 2 lunchroom workers. Revere School also has parent volunteers and retired teacher tutors working with our students. |
